JOB DESCRIPTION

The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
Within the Directorate Services, the ESRF is now seeking to recruit the:

 

Head of Communication (m/f)
Permanent position

 

FUNCTION

As a member of the ESRF Management, directly reporting to the Director General, you are responsible for the ESRF’s communication strategy for both scientific and general communication, externally and internally.

Your main missions:

  • Ensure that the image of the ESRF is commensurate with its position as leader in the European and international field of X-ray science
  • Develop the ESRF’s communication strategy and tools, with the aim of enhancing the ESRF’s visibility to both the general public and scientific community, and strengthening internal communication among ESRF and EPN Science Campus staff, users and visitors
  • Manage all aspects of the ESRF communication, working closely with scientists and ensuring high-quality, high-visibility and high-impact communication
  • Build and implement the ESRF’s public communication strategy and image, in close coordination with other Management members
  • Manage the staff members of the group (5 permanent and some temporary staff)
  • Manage external service providers (consultants, printers, graphic designers, writers, editors, etc.)
  • Plan and manage the budget of the ESRF Communication Group
  • Develop the communication activities, manage the ESRF web page content and the newly constructed ESRF Visitor Centre.

The ESRF communication Group currently carries out the following activities:

  • for the scientific community: printed publications, events, the ESRF newsletter, the annual ESRF Highlights, etc.
  • for the staff: internal communication, information transfer, internal newsletter, etc,
  • for the general public: visits to the ESRF, Open Days, general presentations of the ESRF’s activities, Internet home page, media relations (national and international newspapers and scientific magazines, radio, television, online, etc.).

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

You should have a solid science background and qualification in science communication, holding a higher university degree (Master, MSc, DESS, Diplom, Diploma, Ingeniería Superior, Licenciatura, Laurea or equivalent). You have a 10-year experience in leading the communication strategy and activities within an organization including scientific communication with media and press relations at an international level. You must also have proven managerial skills with the ability to lead and motivate the Communication Group staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and good knowledge of French are necessary.
