Inauguration of the exhibition: 16 Catalan woman scientists

The exhibition "16 Catalan woman scientists" will be inanugurated on Tuesday, February 23rd at 19.00, at the Cultural Center Les Corts. The main objective of this project, organized by the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), is to bridge the gap between the social perception of science and the figure of woman scientists. The exhibition aims at modifying topics, such as the fact that professionals engaged in research are mostly men.

The exhibition, which is based on the profile of 16 scientists working in universities, research centers and companies in Catalonia, has been organized by the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), through a grant from the Department of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

According to Mercè Piqueras, President of the ACCC and coordinator of the exhibition, "although women are still a minority in some areas of research, the number of woman researchers has increased in recent decades. But the biggest presence in the laboratory is hardly reflected in public perception of science".

"In order to compensate this deficit, this exhibition has been prepared on the basis of a series of profiles of woman researchers in different areas: biomedicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics, archeology ,...", states the technical secretary of the exhibition, Raül Toran.

With the  occasion of this exhibition -with is present on the Internet through the blog http://16cientifiquescatalanes.blogspot.com/, a set of talks will showcase the experience of women engaged in the research.

This exhibition, which ends on March 10th and coincides with the International Women's Day, wants to highlight the role of women in the advancement of science in our society. As University of Barcelona researcher Isabel Cacho says: "The job allows a researcher to think, create ... A luxury that is worth. "
